Individual Counseling Sessions
"... [Beliefs] are powerful because they create the lens through which you see the world."
~~Steven R. Covey
Individuals seek counseling for various reasons, each person possessing a unique blend of habits, strengths, skills, and resiliencies that define their humanity.
Within you reside distinct Life experiences, beliefs, goals, challenges, and needs.
As a counselor, I agree that memories can influence both your present reality and your future potential. Therefore, our collaborative work may involve intermittent discussions about influences such as past family dynamics, relationships, and trauma impacting you, whether consciously or unconsciously. If we delve into your past memories, my methods are gentle and diverse.
However, I firmly believe that the actions you choose in your present moment ultimately define who you are now and who you will become as your "Future Self." It is in the present moment that you shape the "You" of the future.
Your present moment is your Point of Power.
To support this philosophy, we may explore current research and insights into how the human brain functions, helping you understand your automatic responses to various Life situations.
Additionally, discussions about your mind-body connection will personalize and reframe your experiences within the broader scientific understanding of psychological, mental, and biological processes, providing insights into how you can "calm" yourself when needed.
Together, we work towards recognizing your innate wholeness, fostering a "healing environment" within you. Any progress within your "Inner World" automatically extends to your interpretation of the Outer World experiences.
Through counseling, you can choose to gain new knowledge or re-member old, embracing the philosophy that your ultimate responsibility to yourself and others directly involves the power of your choices.
There is a correlation between personal choices and your overall Life circumstances (Read: correlation, not necessarily causation!).
Counseling is a collaborative and dynamic process, requiring active participation from both you and me.
As your counselor, my focus is to assist you in achieving your goals, adapting session materials to incorporate new scientific and personal development research findings while maintaining proven foundational materials that you can evaluate and choose to use now, "save" for later, or completely dismiss.
Your role in this dynamic process involves an active commitment to your healing through the experiential realization that, as an adult, you are ultimately 100% responsible for your entire self.
You cannot always control what you encounter in your Life in the Outer World, but only you have ultimate access to your Inner World, where you decide how you will proceed.
Always remember that you own the "leading role" in your Life, and you are the "author" of the ultimate story that unfolds each day for you and around you (through your internal and quite uniquely individualized interpretations)!
Learning, validating, and then embracing this realization, coupled with applying your new or renewed knowledge, are part of counseling. Updating and exercising your coping skills to the here-and-now Life you lead are other avenues of progress.
With these actions and more, you will empower yourself to be more aligned with the "You" that is patiently waiting for your acknowledgment, deep inside of you.
